Fire Department
The Village of South Holland is located just south of Chicago, Illinois and has a nighttime population of 21,455 and a daytime population of over 36,000, covering approximately 11 square miles. Our response area is comprised of over 8,000 residential homes, multiple assisted-living facilities, high rises, industrial facilities, commercial businesses, rail and road—including parts of I-80, I-94, I-294, and route 394. The South Holland Fire Department is a member of the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (M.A.B.A.S.) Division 24 and carries an ISO rating of 2. We respond to over 6,000 calls annually, of which 72 percent are EMS-related.
The South Holland Fire Department is a combination Fire Department comprised of Part-Time/Paid-on-Call firefighters and Full-Time members who are chartered as the South Holland Professional Firefighters Association (IAFF Local 4109). The Village of South Holland staffs a minimum of 6 Full-Time Firefighters daily, assisted by our Part-Time personnel, along with 1 Full-Time Fire Inspector. Staffing levels may increase depending on day and time. The Fire Department consists of 52 members: 27 are Full-Time, 19 are Part-Time/Paid-on-Call, and 6 are Station Support Personnel. These employees’ staff 2 fire stations 24 hours a day. Three Chief Officers work normal business hours, responding to significant incidents off-duty and on-duty providing command and support to the personnel. The South Holland Fire Department is an Advanced Life Support (ALS) EMS response department. Some members specialize in (but are not limited to): Technical Rescue Team (TRT), Dive Rescue Team, and Hazardous Materials Response Team. We also have a Fire Prevention Bureau and a Fire/Arson Investigation Unit. The Fire Prevention Bureau conducts regular fire inspections at all commercial, industrial, and institutional facilities within the Village.
The Fire Department has a Cadet program for individuals 17-21 years of age. They participate in all non-fire-exposure training and can help out on the periphery at a fire scene. If they successfully attend the fire academy, have 1 year on the Department, and are 18 years of age or older, the Department can transfer them to the rank of Paid-On-Call Firefighter.
