The Village of South Holland, Illinois, a leading suburb located 25 miles south of downtown Chicago with a population of approximately 22,000, is actively seeking candidates to fill the Parks Superintendent position with the Public Works department.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Under the general direction of the Director of Public Works, an employee in this class performs a variety of supervision, management, skilled, and unskilled work as a Superintendent and member of a crew or an individual engaged in the construction, demolition, installation, and repair of Village Assets. The employee is responsible for the direct supervision of Public Works employees in the Parks Maintenance and Landscaping Divisions. The Superintendent is responsible for assigning day-to-day tasks to Public Works personnel and making necessary adjustments to ensure that all phases of the Public Works Department operate efficiently and within established parameters. The Superintendent assumes responsibility for the documentation required by state and federal agencies (DOT, OSHA, and any others). The employeeprovides technical advice and assistance, including ongoing improvements to parks, grounds, and public property. Theemployee ensures that municipal work crews use modern, safe, effective, and efficient practices. Work also includescontract management, handling citizen issues, and budget and personnel administration of the department. The employeerepresents the Village to a wide range of citizens and works with engineers, planners, and outside organizations. Work isperformed independently and in coordination with the Director and other Village officials. The employee is subjectto hazards from working in both indoor and outdoor environments, from atmospheric conditions, from working in proximity to heavy equipment, from loud noises, from electrical currents, from oils, from heavy street traffic, and from working in narrow or confined spaces. Duties may also expose the employee to conditions that may be subject to thefinal standards of OSHA’s bloodborne pathogens policies. Work is performed under the supervision of the Director and reviewed through periodic conferences, reports, and results.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Graduation from college with a bachelor’s degree in sports and recreation, horticulture, landscaping, or related field, or considerable experience in a responsible position in the public works field, including supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license,
- Valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License or the ability to acquire a license following the probationary period,
- Seven (7) years’ experience in parks maintenance and repair, with three (3) years in a supervisory position preferred.
