Special Item Collection & Disposal

Some items require special handling and cannot go in your regular garbage toter. Here's what you need to know.

Bulk Waste
The following items may be placed at the curb on your regular collection day, in limited quantities: furniture, box springs and mattresses, sinks, toilets, laundry tubs, building materials, and carpet (cut to 3–4 ft lengths, rolled and tied into bundles).

Between April 1 and October 31, Homewood Disposal will collect bulk items too large for your toter on your regular service day. Any small bulk waste outside the toter must be in plastic bags. If not collected by the regular truck, Homewood will send another truck later that day.

Items Homewood Disposal will NOT collect: engine blocks, transmissions, axles, tires, heavy metal parts, broken concrete, stone, clay, dirt, metal, swimming pools, construction debris, and anything that could damage equipment or injure operators. Residents are responsible for disposing of tires and car parts. Fluids such as paint, cleaners, and oil must be disposed of properly and cannot be placed in trash. If you hire a contractor, the contractor is responsible for removing all debris and materials.

Appliances
Do not place appliances in your regular curbside garbage — they cannot be picked up by Homewood Disposal or Public Works. Contact one of the following to arrange pickup (fees may apply):

·       Got Junk: 800.468.5865

·       Junk It: 844.446.4415 / 866.586.5488

Appliances include: washers, dryers, stoves, refrigerators, freezers, microwaves, water heaters, furnaces, air conditioners, and similar items.

Electronics
Illinois State Law prohibits disposing of electronics in regular garbage or curbside. All electronic waste must be recycled properly. [View area electronic waste disposal sites.]

Seasonal & Other Special Pickups

·       Christmas trees are collected during the first two weeks of January.

·       Branches will be collected if they are less than 4 inches in diameter, cut into 4-foot lengths, bundled with twine, and set out with your toter.
