Snow Removal

Snow and ice control is treated as an emergency operation to ensure public safety. Our crews are prepared year-round with long-term planning, equipment readiness, and short-term response whenever severe weather is forecast.

Our Goal

  • Keep roads passable during heavy snow events
  • Return roads to near bare pavement conditions as quickly as possible after storms
  • Use a combination of:
    • Salt (sodium chloride)
    • Sand/salt mix
    • Calcium chloride (when below 15°F)
    • Mechanical plowing

Street Priority

  1. Arterial streets (major routes) – always cleared first
  2. Main and collector streets – treated after arterials
  3. Residential streets – cleared once main routes are passable (may take several hours after major storms)
  • Cleared to near bare pavement
  • De-icing materials applied with consideration for resources and environmental impact
  • Plowing typically moves snow from the center outward to the curb

Alleys

  • Plowed to full width with one pass in each direction
  • Ends are reopened after street plowing is complete
