Position Title: Crossing Guard
Department: Police
Compensation: $19.85 per hour
Position Summary: Providing professional and effective customer service, supports the mission of the Police Department by protecting the safety of children on their way to and from school. Directs the child-pedestrian and proximate motor vehicle and other traffic to ensure that school children safely cross streets and travel upon sidewalks during assigned times at assigned posts on school days.
Responsibilities:
1. Provides a high level of customer service and acts as a customer relation's agent for the Village of South Holland and the South Holland Police Department at all times.
2. Supervises children at intersections and other assigned posts to ensure that children only cross streets, alleys and driveways, when safe to do so.
3. Stops the movements of motor vehicles and other traffic to ensure the safe and expedient movement of pedestrian and pedal-cycle school children.
4. Surveys assigned posts for unsafe conditions or unusual events and communicates with appropriate officials relative to these conditions and events.
5. Aware of proper communication procedures should a police, fire or medical emergency arise at or near the assigned post.
6. Operates manual and mechanical traffic control devices at assigned traffic post. Properly positions self before, during and after traffic and pedestrian control activities.
7. Properly wears assigned protective clothing and equipment while on duty.
8. Performs any and all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
1. Read and speak the English language.
2. Be at least 18 years of age.
3. Be physically and mentally capable of performing duties in all types of weather.
4. Pass any medical examination, including vision test and full hearing test, or any other test appropriate for the position, by designated physicians as may be required by the Village.
5. Pass a formal background check to assure that he or she is free of any felony or misdemeanor convictions, including those of moral turpitude.
6. Possess a normal range of hearing to ensure detection of traffic, possess a normal range of vision, corrected or uncorrected.
7. Be of high moral standards and integrity.
8. Abide by the current Village Residency requirements.
9. Be able to transport self to assigned post(s) regardless of weather conditions.
10. Successfully complete and pass a Basic Adult School Crossing Guard course of instruction as prescribed by the Police Department School Crossing Guard Supervisor.
11. Successfully complete a 12-month probationary period.
