How is the Smart911 Emergency Alert System used?
- The primary purpose of Smart911 Emergency Alerts is to enhance public safety. By alerting residents to imminent or ongoing emergencies, we can help people take necessary precautions to mitigate risk or damage, to evacuate if needed, or to follow instructions to save lives and property.
- Smart911 is used to warn about severe weather events, natural disasters, public safety threats, Amber Alerts for missing children, significant road closures, utility outages, train derailments, and other urgent situations that require immediate attention and action from the affected population.
- The system is NOT for providing breaking news or news updates. In fact, there can be very real negative impacts when the public is immediately alerted to an event. It can complicate the emergency response in numerous ways, such as:
- It can draw traffic and gawkers to the scene who can unintentionally hinder an investigation.
- It can make it more difficult for public safety crews to secure the area, which takes critical resources away from the rescue effort or investigation.
- Social media posts can affect the perception of witnesses who have yet to be interviewed, which can greatly hinder an investigation. If they’ve read social media posts prior to being interviewed, what did they actually see versus what ideas are in their mind simply because they read a post that may not even be accurate.
The Village will certainly not hesitate to activate an alert if there is something the public needs to do to protect themselves.
